I’m tiling an upstairs bathrom and I need to cut a 7 in hole in the average of the backerboard and a marble tile to suitable around the toilet flange. What’s a good and simple way to cut a clean up hole in together?

The best way is to go to Home Depot or other hardware store that carries Ceramic tile cutting heads. Since it is a round hole you will need to purchase a special hole saw that has a very rough leading edge on the bit. This will score or grind through the tile and the backer board and provide a smooth as possible cut.
It is a lot easier to cut the tile with a normal tile saw or coping saw with a ceramic bit before the tile is layed.
But if the tile is already down this is about the only way. . .
Also you might want to put a couple of layers of masking tape on the tile so that the bit will not scratch the surrounding tile.

Best thing to do would to either invest in a rotozip or a dremel.
These little tools can do just about anything you want it to.
Theres a cutting tool in the Dremel which can cut in the center of an object. Rotozips however are geared more towards ceramic though.

a 4″ grinder with a thin diamond blade, cut it into an octagon shape. Keep a little water at the cut, spray bottle will work.

I like the mini grinder with diamond blade, plus it doesn’t need to be that clean cause it gets covered up. . . . .
