If your talking the mastic in a bucket NO . Thin set mortar ( white to prevent possible staining and bleed thru)is the ONLY way to go. Latex or a modified thin set is a good bet to use also .
The best substrate is a mortar bed of cement, set flat. Properly set cement board can be used also. Use of an unsanded grout is the only way to go for several reasons.

go ahead and hack it up but marble can only be PROPERLY laid by proffessionals.
If you listened to the retards at home depot, crangrats you’re a retard too! if you bought you’re marble there, you don’t have real marble.
It doesn’t seem you have any respect for the trades so there’s no need to post proper technique but laying marble on anything but a mudbed is a sin!
